THE PERFECT GOLF SHOT
What do you look for in a golf photographer? A photographer who happens also to take
photographs of golf courses? Someone who shoots roll after roll of film and tries to sell
every picture? Or do you want a professional photographer who knows his subject inside
out? Someone who has come to know Scotland's golf courses intimately over many years, who
knows their character and moods, and who counts a day well spent if he captures just one
perfect shot? Iain Lowe has built his reputation exclusively on golf photography. From his
base in St Andrews - the home of golf - Iain travels far and wide to photograph Scotland's
rich treasure house of golf courses, as well as farther afield in England and Ireland. Few
can know the Old Course as well as Iain, and he brings the same degree of meticulous
professionalism and skill to every course he visits, resulting in studies that are at once
majestic, evocative and, above all, inspiring.
IAIN LOWE
After 23 years as a Royal Air Force photographer, I resigned from the service in 1993 and
turned my skills to photographing golf courses. For the first two years, I worked only in
my own local area in and around St Andrews, particularly on the Old Course, until I had a
portfolio of sufficient substance to present to courses further afield. After that initial
apprenticeship, I was fortunate to be granted access to many courses throughout Scotland,
England and Ireland. Over the last six years, I have built up a portfolio of over 500
images of the Old Course, capturing every mood and season in the highest quality. Its
sense of history, its beauty and the constant buzz of excited visitors has been the
driving force behind this mammoth task. My Old Course imagery forms a substantial part of
St Andrews And The Open Championship - The Official History, which will be published in
November 1999. I have had the good fortune and pleasure to photograph the construction and
re-emergence of a long closed links course at Kingsbarns near St Andrews. In all, my work
has now taken me from Royal North Devon to Dornoch and from Royal County Down to North
Berwick, which will give you an idea of the ground I have covered. I am also a regular
contributor to Links Magazine and have provided imagery to support editorial and advertising
all around the world.
CORPORATE PROJECTS / PRODUCTS / ADVERTISING / MARKETING
During the last five years, I have supplied specific, previously unpublished imagery, much
of it of the Old Course, to support advertising campaigns, editorials and personalised
products to many companies both in the UK and overseas. Whatever your requirement, whether
it be for a magazine feature or editorial, an advertising campaign, personalised
lithograph or calendar, I can provide the golf imagery you need. Just to give one example,
I provided all the imagery for the official Old Course St Andrews Links Calendar 2000. If
you have a golf project I can help with, please use the link on the left to contact me.
ST ANDREWS AND THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP - THE OFFICIAL HISTORY
This new book - due for release in November 1999 by Sleeping Bear Press, Michegan - is a
dramatic and moving record of the triumphs and tragedies of the Open at St Andrews,
covering the 25 Championships held on the Old Course between 1873 and 1995. Fourth
generation local historian, David Joy, has woven together old text and modern stories to
produce a book that any golfer will be proud to possess. David's text and Iain Lowe's
course imagery combine to capture the magic of the Open in St Andrews, the home of golf.
Old photographs and journals from the 1840's and 1850's, discovered by David in August
1999, are set beside previously unpublished 20th century photography to stunning effect.
Any of Iain Lowe's imagery in the book - including the jacket photograph shown above - can
be supplied as a 20" x 16" hand printed photograph ready for framing.
GOLF NEWS
As a professional golf photographer, my travels inevitably take me far and wide within
Britain and Ireland. In this section, I aim to share with you some of the wonderful golf
courses I have visited. We are truly fortunate to possess within these Isles some of the
most memorable golf courses in the world. Many are world famous. In Scotland, we have the
likes of the Old Course, Turnberry, Carnoustie and Royal Troon, none of which require any
introduction, but there are many other exceptionally fine courses. There are, in fact,
over 500 courses in Scotland and some 60 within one hour's drive of St Andrews. Among the
less well known Scottish courses are some gems waiting to be discovered by a wider golfing
circle, such as Cruden Bay, Golspie, Gullane, North Berwick, Nairn, Royal Aberdeen,
Machrie, Brora, and so on. The list is endless, and Scottish golf is witnessing something
of a boom just now, with many new courses appearing on the scene. Some, such as Loch
Lomond, have made their mark already on the world stage. For others, fame may lie just
around the corner...
KINGSBARNS
Situated just seven miles south of St Andrews, Kingsbarns Golf Links is due to open in
July 2000. Kingsbarns existed as a 9 hole course from the 1790's until 1939, and then
closed. I first photographed the site in 1995 before any construction started. Since 1998,
when work on the course began, I have photographed its progress periodically. The course
is now growing in and, with nearly two miles of beach front, has the spectacular and, at
times, dramatic North Sea as its backdrop. Traditional bunkering, large greens and a
design and layout which allows various approaches to the greens, with corresponding
rewards and penalties, all combine to ensure that this course will be near the top of any
golfer's list when visiting the St Andrews area in the new millennium.
ROYAL DORNOCH
In 1999, Royal Dornoch Golf Club commissioned me for a second time, on this occasion to
provide imagery for their own stroke saver. I produced 18 portrait images of the course,
hole by hole. So much has been written about this most famous northerly course, it is
difficult for me to add words of any real substance. So for those who have not had the
good fortune to make the journey north to Royal Dornoch, let me just say that everything
said about it is true, and the images shown here are just a taste of the delight awaiting
you. For those of you who have already enjoyed this memorable links, this page may be just
the pleasant reminder you need to draw you back again.
